I have to admit, I feel a little odd jumping into a fashion trend after everybody else is already wearing it.

In the case of feather hair extensions, however, the look is so striking that I can’t help but want to join.

However, I want my feather hair extensions to show their own style — and reflect more of myself in the process.

Here’s a few ideas I am using to help break from the crowd and come up with new style ideas for feather hair extensions.

Handmade Feather Hair Extensions:

I’m sure you’ve seen traditional hair extensions. Some of them look really great — especially if they were installed by a professional. However, all too many of them appear to be cheap and end up looking like nothing more than a little bit of fuzz stuck in the hair

That’s a look we definitely want to avoid.

I did some perusing the internet the other day and found that there are online stores such as etsy.com that sell handmade feather hair extensions. They typically have several feathers arranged together in a more intricate style, and even have some beadwork included as well. Basically, these extensions are an entire class above what you will find our your local beauty salon.

Hair Highlight Ideas:

I was struck with this idea when I noticed how some of my friends’ feather hair extensions made me do a “double-take”.    At first glance, it honestly looked like the wearer had braided, or carefully dyed just one strand of hair, and it really was eye-catching.

This look is created by using the long, slender feather hair extensions called “grizzly”. These extensions still retain the black streakings of being a rooster feather, and create a very striking look – especially when worn in dark, almost natural colors. (Natural yellow also looks really good.)

Additionally, they really enhance a hair highlight job by further offsetting the highlighted pattern of your hair with even more color. You can easily create a three-pattern color by carefully choosing a hair highlight color that complements your base hair color, and then choosing two or three feathers that contrast that highlighted color.

Try it, you’ll see what I mean!

Hopefully one of these ideas will help you create a feathery style that is truly, one-of-a-kind!
